Lecture by Mr. Dilip Ranjekar (Azim Premji Foundation)- 5th May, 2011

Dr. Dilip Ranjekar, CEO, Azim Premji Foundation, visited KSRM on 5th May, 2011 and interacted with students and faculty. In his interaction, Dr. Ranjekar, emphasized on the values indirectly enshrined in the preamble of the Indian constitution like Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. The students were enlightened on the education policy of 1986. The goals of education were discussed and these included “Acculturation” which stands for acquiring good values and then passing it on to our next generation and to society, inculcating sensitivity to the suffering of other people and inculcating “scientific temper”. Even though two cardinal documents, viz, the Constitution and the Education Policy are there to guide our society, unfortunately our society is still facing inequality, poverty and unemployment. Nearly 13 lakh schools are spread over 98 percent of Indian villages but female literacy level is still much lower than the male literacy level.

Dr. Ranjekar also assured during his speech that “Azim Premji Foundation engages with these and other issues and lays emphasis on infusing professionalism in the development sector”. He said, there is no political bill to ensure accountability. At every level of the education process, many students get filtered out because there is no risk/reward system in the government which favours performance and punishes non-performance. Citizens also have neglected their own democratic rights vis-à-vis the state; for example if there is a school with no teachers in it, the community does not voice its opposition. Azim Premji Foundation is collaborating with state governments and other actors to bring about a change in this scenario
